UPTE

| University Professional
& Technical Employees (UPTE) was founded at the University of California
in 1990. We include Staff Research Associates, Clinical Lab Techs, Electronics
Techs, Student Affairs Officers, Analysts, Lab Assistants, Editors, Artists,
Writers, Museum Scientists, Mechanicians, Program Reps, Programmer/Analysts,
and Computer Operators, among many other titles. 20,000 UC employees are
eligible to join UPTE. There are UPTE locals at all nine campuses, five
medical centers, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and the Office of the President.
We also have "systemwide" offices,
so we can coordinate and bargain as one body.
In the early 1990s, as a young union with a relatively small number of constituents, UPTE members saw that we could gain strength and seasoned wisdom by affiliating with a larger, long-established union. We studied which union would be the best fit. In April 1993, UPTE members voted to affiliate with the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a 700,000 member union in the AFL-CIO. We are now officially UPTE-CWA 9119. UPTE arose from a grass-roots effort of employees who believed that UC workers would benefit by having a union to safeguard and expand our rights in the workplace. Many of us, when first hired, presumed the University would be an enlightened employer, valuing its workers and their contributions, and demonstrating that appreciation in salaries that pay living and competitive wages. We discovered that, while employees are given raises that don't keep pace with inflation, upper management is given raises that, in some cases, exceeds the annual salary of the employees. We've found a number of other less than enlightened salary issues, policies, and work conditions. The last several years of bargaining has netted UPTE members better raises and conditions than the University has offered its rank and file -- proof of the value of a strong union. And the University benefits as well: satisfied employees who can raise families while working at the University do a better job and stay longer than employees who are constantly stressed from being devalued and underpaid. UPTE is a democratic union, run by its members. What we accomplish is up to us. The union stereotype that many of us grew up with does not apply. All UPTE members are encouraged to attend their local meetings and the University-wide fall convention to see for themselves what active members are doing and how they conduct themselves. You will find passionate fellow UC employees who, at times may disagree strongly, but always treat one another respectfully, and come together in the end. We've learned that when we approach UC management as a single voice, UPTE can accomplish great things for the members and the University as a whole. If you have not yet joined, check us out.
